Wellbutrin and Tranquilizers

There are two main types or classes of tranquilizers. They are called major and minor tranquilizers. The former are antipsychotic drugs and the latter are considered anti-anxiety drugs.

If you take Wellbutrin, then it is not recommended for you to take major class tranquilizers as it can lead to certain side effects.

Major type tranquilizers have a strong sedative effect, meaning they calm or relax the person taking it. This type of tranquilizers make highly agitated patients quiet and calm without making them unconscious. However, it also makes them much less aware mentally, as they seemed to have little or no interest in anything going on around them.

Since Wellbutrin is not only a quit-smoking aid, but also an effective antidepressant that influences nervous system, you should not combine it with tranquilizers.

Wellbutrin can raise the level of some antipsychotic medications in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Besides, taking Wellbutrin with antipsychotic medications may increase your chance of developing seizures.

To the group of major tranquilizers belong the following drugs: Haldol, Risperdal, Thorazine, and Mellaril. These drugs are referred to as Neuroleptics and are most commonly prescribed as anti-psychotics.

Haldol should be used only when there is no other choice. This is one of a group of psychiatric drugs which causes a serious and sometimes fatal reaction called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. It may cause body temperature rising, rigid muscles and coma (passing out), rapid heart beating and breathing, sweating, shaking and seizures.

Thorazine is an atypical antipsychotic agent, which is used to treat both negative and positive symptoms of schizophrenia, acute mania with bipolar disorder, agitation, and psychotic symptoms in dementia.

Mellaril is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat schizophrenia in people who have not responded well to other antipsychotic medications.

Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication. It is an "atypical antipsychotic". It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperdal is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability.

All these drugs can reduce the seizure threshold, particularly in the elderly and in patients with a history of seizures or other risk factors for seizures, that is why it is very important to consult your doctor before taking any of these drugs together with Wellbutrin.
