Systemic Antibiotic Fucidin Treatment
Systemic antibiotic treatment with Fucidin is usually appointed to those patients having more extensive disease, deeper infections with the evidence of systematic spread of the infection.
Fusidic acid may be applied orally in two forms: a tablet (250mg) and a suspension (50 mg/ml). The oral treatment is accepted in case of bone and joint infections or skin and soft tissue infections due to penicillinase-producing and non- penicillinase producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
The oral treatment by Fusidic acid has proves to be advantageous because the accumulation of the antibiotic in skin crust or a vascular tissue prevents bacterial invasion. Oral fusidic acid administration demonstrates higher fluid concentrations in skin blisters which are above the minimal inhibitory concentration of the bacteria. The antibiotic shows an effective and adequate tissue penetration. The main work of the fusidic acid is that it inhibits bacterial protein synthesis hindering the growth of the bacteria.
As far as dosing is concerned it depends on the patients as the dosing may be different for different patients. The number of tablets and teaspoons of suspension taken depends on the strength of the medicine. The medical problem for which a patient applies to fusidic acid will predetermine the number of doses each day, the time allowed between the doses, the length of time one should take the medication.
When one is taking fusidic acid one should be particularly cautious about not taking such medication together with Fucidin as Lyncomycin or Rifampin as they may interfere with the liver. One should also avoid amino acid solution or whole blood products because there may develop a risk for damage to the red blood cells.
Moreover, if a person suffers any other medical problems they should inform the doctor about them before taking fusidic acid because the antibiotic may exert a negative impact on the condition (for example, liver disease).
Possible side effects caused by oral fusidic acid are not various and may or may not need paying any medical attention to. These side effects may go away during the treatment as the body adjusts to the medicine. Among them there are unusual tiredness or weakness, yellow eyes or skin, loss of appetite, stomach pain, loose stool. In any case all these conditions should be checked with the doctor to decide about the continuation of systemic fusidic acid treatment.
